Portraits of Art is an ongoing photographic project dedicated to the protagonists of contemporary art.
Through black-and-white portraiture, Michele Stanzione has built an extensive photographic archive documenting artists, curators, critics, gallery owners and cultural figures who have shaped the contemporary art scene.
The project is not conceived as a conventional collection of portraits. Each image seeks to reveal something beyond the public identity of the subject: a gesture, a gaze, a silence, a presence.
Photography becomes a meeting point between the artist and the person, between the public figure and the individual behind the work.
THE FACE BEHIND THE ART
Behind every work there is a person.
Portraits of Art explores this space between the artwork and its creator, transforming the portrait into a form of artistic memory.
Michele Stanzione’s black-and-white photographs seek neither to illustrate nor to explain the artist. They attempt to create a moment of encounter — an image in which personality, vulnerability and artistic identity can coexist.
